Cyprus summer…
Hot, humid, endless…
Temperature rises above 40 degrees. The sun burns mercilessly. Asphalt melts. Even breathing becomes difficult.
But despite all this, I love Cyprus summer. Because it reminds me of my childhood, beautiful memories.
When we were children, we wouldn’t enter the house at all in summer. We would spend all day outside. We would play in the garden, we would explore the fields, we would swim in the sea.
Of course adults would always warn us. “Don’t go out in the heat,” they would say, “You’ll get sunstroke.” But we wouldn’t listen. Because for us summer meant freedom.
At noon when the heat peaked, we would go under the shade of trees. We would lie there and rest. Sometimes we would sleep, sometimes we would chat.
In those moments, time would stop. There was nowhere we had to go, nothing we had to do. We were completely free.
In the evenings when the weather cooled down a bit, we would go back to playing. We would play until late at night. Our mothers would have a hard time getting us into the house.
Now I can’t stand heat like I used to. When it’s very hot, I prefer to stay in air-conditioned places. But still, Cyprus summer has a special place in my heart.
Because it reminds me of those carefree days, that freedom, that joy of life. And these are priceless…
